The Master of Fine Arts Degree

The MFA degree provides the graduate candidate the skill to produce artwork of exceptional quality, both conceptually and technically. This is a terminal degree in the visual arts allowing the student to pursue a professional artistic career as well as giving them the credentials to teach at the college level.

The Visiting Artists Program

In the last twenty years, the student governed metals club has hosted over fifty internationally and nationally prominent jewelers, metalsmiths, and educators on campus.

Jewelry Design and Metalsmithing Studio Facilities

The newly renovated 3D Art Annex is one of the premier jewelry/metalsmithing facilities in the southwest United States with over 6,000 square feet of space, six jewelry/metalsmithing studios, level-one laboratory and ventilation systems, an emphasis on health and safety and 24-hour studio access for students.

Our facilities include a Computer Aided Design Area with a 4 axis CNC 1000 milling machine, rotary table, using Art Cam Jewelsmith design software.

The soldering and annealing room is outfitted with fifteen, large work stations.  Each station offers: individual light control, two acetylene torches, oxygen-acetylene mini torch, compressed air and a natural gas torch. This area also includes a large, centrally located workstation for instructor demonstrations and large-scale soldering.

The etching anodizing room is a separate space within the jewelry metals area which has an advanced ventilation system for spray etching, anodizing, electroplating, electroforming, reactive metals and the safe storage of chemistry.

Our outdoor hammering and raising yard is available for activities such as powder coating, large outdoor castings, large scale enameling, lapidary work, plasma arc cutting, and oxyacetylene welding. An additional 1,000 square foot covered workspace is equipped with anvils, power outlets, lighting, natural gas and air, and a protective wall.

The Texas Tech Jewelry Design and Metalsmithing program teaches students at all levels how to produce publishing ready digital photographic images. The program processes all necessary equipment to produce professional quality photography.

Robly A. Glover, Professor of Jewelry Design and Metalsmithing

Robly A. Glover

Rob Glover studied Jewelry Design and Metalsmithing at Indiana State University in Terre Haute (BFA) and Indiana University in Bloomington earning his MFA in 1987. His work has been included in many publications including Lark Books 500 series: 500 Necklaces, 500 Metal Vessels and 500 Plastic Jewelry Designs), American Craft Magazine, and in 2002 Metalsmith Magazine ran a cover and feature article on Glover’s work. His work has been collected by museums including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England, Dallas Museum of Art, The Art Institute of Chicago and the Yale Silver Collection. 

 

Nancy Slagle, Associate Professor of Jewelry Design and Metalsmithing and Associate Director School of Art

Nancy Slagle

Nancy Slagle studied Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa (BFA) and Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana (MFA). In 1988 she received a National Endowment for the Arts Individual Artists Grant. Her work is represented in collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery, Art Institute of Chicago and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England. She exhibits nationally and her work has been included in many publications including Lark Books 500 Series: 500 Metal Vessels and 500 Wedding Rings, American Craft and Metalsmith.
